Governors

Every school has a governing body made up of a team of volunteers which represent the various stakeholders in a school; the local community, the Local Authority, parents and school staff. The remit of the governing body is to support and challenge the school and is responsible for setting the overall aims and objectives of the school as well as monitoring and evaluating school performance.

At South Park Primary School, we work with the school and the senior leadership team to improve pupils' standards of achievement and ensure their well-being. Through effective teaching and learning we aim to give every pupil a love of learning that will allow them to achieve to the best of their ability.

In June 2015, we reconstituted our governing body and as a result, it is now made up of 9 members, which are: 4 co-opted governors, 1 local Authority governor, 2 Parent governors and 2 staff governors, one of which is the Head Teacher. This means that we are now a much smaller governing body and have disbanded our 3 previous sub-committees, the responsibilities which are now met by the full governing body.

The governing body meet formally twice every term and receive a report from the head teacher detailing everything from staffing to fire drills. Through monitoring and evaluation we ensure the effective running and progression of the school.

Governors visit the school regularly and discuss a wide range of topics with both staff and pupils, reporting back to the full Governing Body on successes, progress and issues. As Chair of Governors, I regularly meet with the Head Teacher to discuss ongoing issues and provide chairs actions for anything that requires an immediate response before the next formal governing body meeting.

Over the period of the school year, we monitor and review attendance, oversee staff training, ensure that the national curriculum is taught and monitor our extended schools provision. We review budgets, audit reports and statutory policies, including school pay, performance management and staff leave. We review and approve the staffing structure, monitor health and safety reports, building contracts and we also oversee repair and maintenance reports from the Head teacher.
